The High Court, known as the Supreme Court until 1980, was established in 1841. It comprises the head of the New Zealand Judiciary, the Chief Justice and 36 other judges. The High Court has jurisdiction over major crimes and civil claims involving more that $200,000. It deals with judicial reviews of administrative action and admiralty proceedings. The High Court also frequently hears appeals from tribunals and lower courts, including the District Court.

(1) The Supreme Court of Ontario is continued as a superior court of record having civil and criminal jurisdiction, with all the jurisdiction, power and authority historically exercised by courts of common law and equity in England and Ontario. (2) The Supreme Court shall continue to consist of two branches, the Court of Appeal for Ontario and the High Court of Justice for Ontario.

(1) The High Court shall consist of the Chief Justice of the High Court, who shall be president of the court, the Associate Chief Justice of the High Court and such number of other judges as is fixed under subsections.
