Au terme d'une longue étude, le chercheur John Holland a établi l'existence de six types de personnes au travail. Il les a dénommées comme suit : «Réaliste»(R),«Investigateur»(I), «Artistique»(A), «Social»(S), «Entreprenant»(E), «Conventionnel»(C). Selon Holland, et de nombreuses recherches l'ont confirmé, le choix d'une profession, d'un métier est une forme d'expression de la personnalité d'un individu et donc en rapport avec sa typologie.
