Plusieurs légendes sont liées à l'usage des icônes. Suivant l'une des principales, le Christ aurait, de son vivant, fait parvenir à Abgar, roi d'Osroène, une empreinte de son visage, connue dans la tradition iconographique sous le nom de Sainte Face ou Mandylion (Christ acheiropoietos, non peint de main humaine); cette image aurait joué le rôle de palladium.
