HUMIDITY [2 records]

Record 1 2012-02-03

English

Subject field(s)
  • Atmospheric Physics
DEF

Water as it occurs in various forms in the air.

CONT

Moisture in the atmosphere plays a greater role in weather and climate than any of the other constituents of the air. It is so significant that it is commonly considered separately from the remainder of the air by meteorologists. In one or more of its forms atmospheric moisture is a factor in cloudiness, visibility, precipitation, and humidity. By virtue of its ability to hold latent heat in its vapor and liquid forms, water is an important medium for the transfer of energy.

OBS

In meteorology, the term "moisture" is a general term referring to the water vapor content of the atmosphere. In climatology, it refers more specifically to quantities of precipitation.

OBS

humidity: generally, some measure of the water-vapor content of air.

OBS

atmospheric moisture: term standardized by ISO.

French

Domaine(s)
  • Physique de l'atmosphère
DEF

Record 2 2007-10-31

English

Subject field(s)
  • Atmospheric Physics
  • Air Conditioning and Heating
DEF

The (dimensionless) ratio of the actual vapor pressure of the air to the saturation vapor pressure.

CONT

High relative humidity contributes to slab formation. [Example approved by the Avalanche Bulletin Terminology Standardization Committee.]

OBS

Relative humidity is popularly called "humidity".

OBS

The corresponding ratios of specific humidity or of mixing ratio give approximations of sufficient accuracy for many purposes in meteorology. The relative humidity is usually expressed in per cent, and can be computed from psychometric data. The ratio of mixing ratio to saturation mixing ratio was preferred as a definition of relative humidity by the International Meteorological Organization.

OBS

"Relative humidity" is defined in a very distinctive way in those instances where the "relative humidity of moist air with respect to ice" or "with respect to water" is being referred to.

OBS

relative humidity: term standardized by ISO and officially approved by the Avalanche Bulletin Terminology Standardization Committee.

French

Domaine(s)
  • Physique de l'atmosphère
  • Conditionnement de l'air et chauffage
DEF
