Hummock marshes occur on heights of land in zones of groundwater upwelling and are perched above the groundwater table. They may be located on slopes or in depressions. Hummock marshes may form by the accretion of mineral or organic material built up by discharging mineral-rich groundwater.

Les marais de butte se trouvent sur les hauteurs des terrains, dans les secteurs de remontées d'eau souterraine, et sont perchés au-dessous de la nappe phréatique. Ils se trouvent parfois aussi sur des pentes ou dans des dépressions. Les marais de butte se forment aussi par l'accrétion littorale de matières minérales ou organiques constituées par écoulement d'eau souterraine riche en minéraux.
