Le codage est d'autant plus efficace qu'il y a une forte corrélation des aspects spatiaux (les échantillons proches ont, en moyenne, des valeurs voisines) et temporels (les échantillons proches spatialement ne changent pas de valeur dans des images successives). Ce type de réalisation de l'algorithme TCD est appelé transformation en cosinus discrète hybride (TCDH).
