Le vocable «tables et plates-formes élévatrices» a longtemps été utilisé indifféremment pour désigner un système élévateur permettant d'élever verticalement un plateau par un dispositif de poussée (vérins, x de levage) placé sous ce plateau, sans tenir compte de la nature de la charge. Actuellement, le terme «tables élévatrices» s'applique aux matériels définis ci-avant mais dont la fonction essentielle est d'élever des charges avec occasionnellement du personnel, alors que le terme «plates-formes élévatrices» est réservé aux matériels élevant essentiellement du personnel avec occasionnellement des charges.
