Aerosols refers to small suspended particles in a gas. Aerosols usually range of size from 1nm molecules on up to 100µm pollen grains, a difference in size of over 100,000 times. Often these suspended particles are liquids, referred to collectively as hydrosols.

L'air atmosphérique contient toujours de tels aérosols [particules solides] ou hydrosols [particules liquides] en suspension. Ces fines particules absorbent partiellement les rayonnements provenant des objets observés et réduisent par conséquent le flux énergétique impressionnant l'œil de l'observateur. Par ailleurs, elles diffusent la lumière provenant du soleil ou des sources lumineuses artificielles, provoquant une luminance de fond qui, en atténuant les contrastes, participe à limiter encore davantage la portée visuelle.
