Hygro- (du grec = humide) et hydro- (du grec = eau) se retrouvent, en opposition, dans "hydropsammon" et "hygropsammon" (B. Dussart, Limnologie, 1966, p. 356). Hydropsmannon = ensemble des formes colonisant la portion submergée du fond sableux au-dessous du niveau moyen des eaux; hygropsammon = portion située immédiatement au-dessus du niveau des eaux, constituée de sable saturé d'eau en permanence. Par analogie, il est donc clair que la zone des hygrohalophytes est, par opposition à la zone des hydrohalophytes, la zone d'halophytes «humide», située immédiatement au-dessus du niveau des eaux et constituée de sable saturé d'eau en permanence.
