condensation nucleus. A particle on which condensation of water vapor begins in the free atmosphere, where it invariably takes place on hygroscopic dust or hygroscopic gases. The common sources of such dust and gases are sea salt, products of combustion, and dust blown from the earth's surface.

Ces noyaux de condensation comprennent d'une part des "noyaux neutres" - poussières d'origines diverses, cendres volcaniques, débris végétaux (pollens), petites particules hygroscopiques de sel marin ... - qui sont surtout abondants dans les deux ou trois premiers kilomètres de l'atmosphère, et d'autre part des particules électrisées, les ions, présents partout, qui s'unissent aux noyaux neutres pour former des "gros ions".

OBS

Dans son sens général le terme "poussière" est synonyme de "particule". Dans son sens spécifique, il désigne une particule solide de dimension supérieure à un micron.
