L'hyperéosinophilie est une des principales caractéristiques de l'asthme et des réactions allergiques et la dégranulation de ces cellules est observée dans le tissu pulmonaire des asthmatiques. Elles participe probablement aux phénomènes d'hyper-réactivité bronchique. Les granules de ces cellules contiennent la major basic protein (MBP) qui, avec d'autres protéines cationiques et neurotoxiques, se retrouve dans les sécrétions bronchiques des asthmatiques.
