Un mécanisme est dit isostatique lorsque, en l'absence d'actions mécaniques extérieures, les actions mécaniques de liaison sont nulles. Dans le cas contraire, le mécanisme est dit hyperstatique, le degré d'hyperstatisme étant égal au nombre d'inconnues d'actions mécaniques de liaison qu'il faut définir pour pouvoir déterminer toutes les autres.

hyperstatique : Qui est soumis à des formes qu'on ne peut calculer par les méthodes de mécanique rationnelle (il faut faire intervenir les déformations élastiques).
