Silicate ferromagnésien hydraté de composition chimique variable et mal connue. [Elle] se présente en agrégats cryptocristallins conservant la forme de cristaux d'olivine dont elle provient (...) L'iddingsite constitue un minéral d'altération essentiel des péridots ferrifères dans les roches basiques d'épanchement (basaltes). Cette altération respecte la forme propre du cristal d'olivine et débute souvent à sa périphérie. On peut ainsi observer un "cristal" d'iddingsite parfaitement défini et conservant au centre des reliques encore intactes d'olivine.
