Formal climate-related work in FAO started as early as 1968 when FAO, the World Meteorogical Organization (WMO) and the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) established the Interagency Group on Agricultural Biometeorology. Later on, FAO launched the agro-ecological zones Project (AEZ) and the Global Information and Early Warning System on Food and Agriculture (GIEWS).

Les travaux officiels de la FAO concernant le climat ont commencé en 1968 lorsque cette dernière, l'Organisation météorologique mondiale (OMM) et l'Organisation des Nations Unies pour l'éduction, la science et la culture (UNESCO) ont établi le Groupe interorganisations sur la biométéorologie agricole. Par la suite, la FAO a lancé le projet des zones agroécologiques et le Système mondial d'information et d'alerte rapide sur l'alimentation et l'agriculture (SIMIAR).
