Illinois Central Railroad Company is a wholly owned subsidiary of Illinois Central Corporation that is a subsidiary of Canadian National Railway Company. The company operates 2,600 miles of main line track between Chicago, Illinois and Gulf of Mexico. The track is used primarily for transporting chemicals, coal, paper, grain and milled grain and intermodal trailers and containers.

The Illinois Central is the only major rail carrier in the United States still operating essentially under its own name without interruption after nearly a century-and-a-half since its founding. In its long and colorful history, the IC achieved many "firsts" in the fields of commerce, transportation and western settlement.
