There are five classes of immunoglobulins: (i) immunoglobulin G (IgG), (ii) immunoglobulin M (IgM), (iii) immunoglobulin A (IgA), (iv) immunoglobulin E (IgE), and (v) immunoglobulin D (IgD).

OBS

For some authors, the term "immunoglobulin" is synonymous with the term "antibody." However, while all antibodies are immunoglobulins, not all immunoglobulins are antibodies.

Les Ig comportent deux paires de chaînes polypeptidiques, une paire de chaînes légères et une paire de chaînes lourdes, reliées entre elles par des ponts disulfures.

Les immunoglobulines sont divisées en cinq types : IgG, IgA, IgD, IgM et IgE; cette division est basée surtout sur la composante protéique la plus importante de l'immunoglobuline.

OBS

Certains auteurs considèrent le terme «immunoglobuline» comme synonyme du terme «anticorps». Toutefois, tous les anticorps sont des immunoglobulines, mais les immunoglobulines ne sont pas toutes des anticorps.
