La poursuite permanente des variants antigéniques par le système immunitaire devrait [...] pousser le virus [du sida] dans une cachette absolue et définitive. Pour obtenir une telle adaptation, il est nécessaire que le virus soit maintenu dans une environnement immunologique stable. En d'autres termes, il faut que le virus reste pendant de longues périodes à l'intérieur d'un petit groupe d'individus génétiquement proches les uns des autres. En effet, le passage du virus vers un groupe d'individus différents, annulerait la transparence obtenue précédemment.
