[The] IMOSAR Manual was adopted in 1978. It was designed to help Governments to implement the SAR [search and rescue] Convention and provided guidelines rather than requirements for a common maritime search and rescue policy, encouraging all coastal States to develop their organizations on similar lines and enabling adjacent States to co-operate and provide mutual assistance. It was also updated in 1992, with the amendments entering into force in 1993.

The IMOSAR Manual has been replaced by the International Aeronautical and Maritime Search and Rescue manual (IAMSAR).

En 1978, le Comité de la sécurité maritime (MSC), l'organe technique principal de l'OMI, adopta un second manuel intitulé «Manuel de recherche et de sauvetage de l'OMI (IMOSAR)», en vue d'aider les gouvernements à mettre en œuvre la Convention internationale sur la recherche et le sauvetage maritimes. Plutôt que des prescriptions, ce manuel énonçait les principes directeurs d'une action commune en matière de recherche et de sauvetage maritimes, de façon à encourager tous les États côtiers à mettre en place leurs organisations selon des modalités analogues et à permettre aux États limitrophes de coopérer et de se prêter mutuellement assistance. Lui aussi fut mis à jour en 1992, les amendements étant entrés en vigueur en 1993.
