In the absence of air and other oxidizing materials, hydrogen acts as an asphyxiant by displacing air. Persons breathing an oxygen-deficient atmosphere ... become cyanotic, suffer impaired alertness and muscular coordination, followed by collapse and death if exposure is prolonged.
