Although the deletion principle constrains the form of incorrect procedures by maintaining the structure of the correct one, a better model of impasse generation requires a theory of how procedural skills are acquired through the kind of teaching sequences children encounter in schools (VanLehn, 1981). VanLehn's doctoral dissertation (1983a, 1983b) is an impressive attempt at coupling the principles of REPAIR theory with such a model. The name "STEP theory" highlights the central role played by successive lessons in incrementally transforming functional subsets of the skill into its complete version. This emphasis on knowledge as the result of a communication process clearly sets this work apart from other AI models of skill acquisition, which mainly concentrate on the effect of practice on performance.
