La pollution atmosphérique d'origine industrielle peut être acidoparticulaire ou photo-oxydante. La pollution acidoparticulaire atteint l'environnement par la combustion des ressources énergétiques fossiles (divers types de charbon, pétrole, gaz naturel) dans les foyers domestiques et industriels et dans les transports, qui rejettent alors des particules charbonneuses, du dioxyde de soufre, des oxydes d'azote, transformés ensuite en acides sulfurique et nitrique.
