Après avoir observé pendant près d'un an l'ensemble du ciel dans une fourchette de longueurs d'onde comprise entre 12 et 100 micromètres (un domaine presque entièrement filtré par l'atmosphère terrestre, et donc inaccessible du sol), celui-ci, à la grande surprise des chercheurs révèle en effet l'existence de nuages diffus, uniformément répartis dans le ciel et baptisés "cirrus infrarouges", de par leur ressemblance avec leurs homologues terrestres.
