The World Business Council for Sustainable Development was formed in January 1995 through a merger between the Business Council for Sustainable Development in Geneva and the World Industry Council for the Environment in Paris - the two organizations which led the business response to the challenges arising from the United Nations Conference on Environment and Development in Rio in 1992. The WBCSD is a coalition of more than 120 international companies which share a commitment to the environment and to the principles of economic growth and sustainable development.
