By resolution 49/214 of December 23, 1994, the United Nations General Assembly decided that the International Day of the World's Indigenous Peoples shall be observed on August 9 every year. The date marks the day of the first meeting, in 1982, of the UN Working Group on Indigenous Populations of the Sub-Commission on the Promotion and Protection of Human Rights.

Par sa résolution A/RES/49/214, adoptée le 23 décembre 2014, l'Assemblée générale des Nations Unies a décidé de célébrer chaque année le 9 août la Journée internationale des peuples autochtones. Cette date marque le jour de la première réunion, en 1982, du Groupe de travail de l'ONU sur les populations autochtones au sein de la Sous-Commission de la promotion et de la protection des droits de l'homme.
