Le médecin berlinois Werner Forssmann procéda à une auto-expérimentation en s'insérant un tuyau de 65 cm dans la veine du bras jusqu'au cœur. Cela fait, il se rendit à pied jusqu'à l'installation de rayons X pour y faire procéder à une radiographie. L'extrémité du tuyau atteignait l'oreillette droite. L'idée du cathéter cardiaque était née.
