The primary use of oxytocin (Pitocin) is to induce or to improve the quality of labor. The uterus is relatively resistant to oxytocin in early pregnancy, but infusions given with hypertonic saline injections may speed abortions of later pregnancy.

(Dans le cas de l'évacuation utérine, un inconvénient de l'injection intra-amniotique de prostaglandines) est l'absence de tout contrôle sur la dynamique utérine une fois l'injection réalisée. Cet inconvénient se traduit par le risque non négligeable de lacération cervicale qui est toutefois très nettement diminué si l'on prescrit les perfusions ocytociques complémentaires.
