Le terme d'irrigation est plus restrictif que celui d'arrosage en ce sens que l'irrigation est forcément artificielle tandis que l'arrosage peut s'appliquer aussi à des apports naturels; il est plus large en ce sens qu'irriguer ne consiste pas seulement à répandre l'eau sur une parcelle, c'est aussi mobiliser les ressources pour les transporter et les distribuer par un réseau d'irrigation entre les différentes parcelles d'un périmètre d'irrigation.
