Les méthodes d'irrigation sont diverses. Le "ruissellement" consiste à faire écouler une nappe d'eau, jusqu'à ce que l'humectation atteigne la profondeur voulue; la submersion" accumule une couche d'eau relativement épaisse, immobile, couche qui s'infiltre en totalité ou en partie; les "rigoles d'infiltration" distribuent un courant d'eau dans des raies sillonnant toute la surface à irriguer; l'"aspersion" répand l'eau en pluie fine.
