The name of the island occupied by the insular portion of the province of Newfoundland that entered Canadian Confederation in 1949 and was renamed "Newfoundland and Labrador" on December 6, 2001. The island is surrounded by the Strait of Belle Isle to the North, the Labrador Sea and the Atlantic Ocean to the East, the Atlantic Ocean and the Cabot Strait to the South, and the Gulf of St. Lawrence to the West.
