The Joint Institute for Marine and Atmospheric Research (JIMAR) was created in 1977 by an agreement between the Environmental Research Laboratories (ERL) of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) and the University of Hawaii (UH). JIMAR was established to pursue the common research interests of NOAA and the UH in oceanic, atmospheric, and geophysical research.
