Dans le genre [de Poisson] «Scomber», [...] on observe la disposition suivante : le prootique est percé, par dédoublement en quelque sorte de sa paroi, d'un court canal horizontal, parcouru, d'avant en arrière, par la veine jugulaire. De l'ouverture antérieure du canal sort le nerf trijumeau et les branches du nerf facial innervant la ligne latérale; de l'ouverture postérieure, la branche hyomandibulaire du nerf facial. On donne à ce canal creusé dans la paroi du prootique le nom de «canal jugulaire». Sa limite extérieure est formée par une expansion vers le haut de la barre sous-oculaire qui vient se souder au-dessus de la veine jugulaire, à la capsule otique.
