The heavy, square or hexagonal, steel member that is suspended from the swivel through the rotary table and is connected to the topmost joint of drill pipe to turn the drill stem as the rotary table turns.

The kelly is free to move down through the rotary table as the bit and drill pipe advance in the hole.

OBS

grief stem: An old-fashioned term for a heavy, square pipe that works through the square hole in the rotary table ... This is generally called the "kelly" or a "kelly joint." Sometimes it has a hexagonal cross section.
