Après la Seconde Guerre mondiale, la Corée est occupée par les Américains et les Soviétiques. Le début de la Guerre froide empêche toute réunification et, en 1948, deux États sont proclamés. Au Nord, la République démocratique populaire, d'obédience communiste; au Sud, la République de Corée, libérale. De 1950 à 1953, fait rage une guerre opposant les deux régimes qui se solde par le retour aux frontières d'origine. La chute du communisme en Europe a provoqué un rapprochement entre les deux Corées.
