On considère généralement que la bande Ku va de 12 à 18 GHz, mais les ingénieurs des télécommunications par satellite désignent par ce terme une gamme de fréquences plus étendue allant de 10,7 à 18,4 GHz, qui inclut en fait une partie de la bande X (8-12 GHz) et de la bande K (18-27 GHz). Presque tous les satellites en bande Ku utilisent au moins une partie de la gamme de fréquences de la bande X (10,7-12 GHz), alors qu'ils sont relativement peu nombreux (par exemple, HOT BIRDT 3 et 4) à utiliser des fréquences de la bande K (18,0-18,4 GHz).
