Dans le Rig-veda, ce mot signifie simplement "chance". Dans l'Atharvaveda, il apparaît sous les traits d'un être féminin, porteur tantôt de chance, tantôt de malchance. Plus tard, Lakshmî ou Shri devint la déesse du bonheur, épouse de Vishnu et mère de Kâma. Bien qu'elle possède quatre bras, on la représente souvent avec deux bras seulement, conformément à son image de symbole de la beauté dans l'une de ses mains, elle tient une fleur de lotus. Aucun temple, ne lui est consacré; néanmoins, déesse de l'abondance et du bonheur, elle est l'objet de prières incessantes et n'eut jamais a souffrir de désaffection.
