Canary Islands (Spanish "Islas Canarias"): A group of islands in the Atlantic, about 70 miles off the Northwest African coast, forming two Spanish provinces: Santa Cruz de Tenerife and Las Palmas. Seven are inhabited: Tenerife, Fuerteventura, Gran Canaria, Lanzarote, Palma, Gomera and Hierro.
