En anglais, les expressions «early or late type star» se rapportent strictement à l'ancienne suite des types spectraux. Les théories d'évolution stellaire ayant changé récemment, il est devenu nécessaire de donner une précision supplémentaire pour indiquer l'âge de l'étoile; on dira: a) young star (étoile jeune), b) old star (étoile vieille). Mais une étoile jeune peut avoir un type spectral précoce (early) ou tardif (late). De même, une étoile vieille peut avoir un type spectral précoce ou tardif.
