Dans la plupart des explosifs industriels, la détonation doit être déclenchée par une amorce. Les amorces les plus courantes sont les détonateurs électriques, petits tubes en aluminium ou en cuivre qui contiennent quelques grammes d'explosifs très sensibles, capables de détoner par simple échauffement. Une résistance électrique, prolongée par deux fils qui sortent du tube, est destinée à provoquer cet échauffement au passage d'un courant électrique. Le détonateur est introduit dans la cartouche d'explosif à faire détoner, ou bien fixé sur un cordeau détonant qui transmettra la détonation aux différentes charges d'explosifs.
