In Marxist philosophy, leninism is the body of political theory for the democratic organisation of a revolutionary vanguard party, and the achievement of a dictatorship of the proletariat, as political prelude to the establishment of socialism.

Le léninisme a été la première application concrète du marxisme. En pleine révolution, Lénine a souvent dû improviser dans des circonstances très difficiles. D'ailleurs, les solutions adoptées par le régime révolutionnaire ont été fortement contestées par certains marxistes. Le gouvernement fortement centralisé installé à Moscou ainsi que le rôle prédominant du Parti communiste ont façonné de façon durable le régime soviétique. L'échec retentissant du socialisme en URSS a grandement discrédité le léninisme.
