LETHAL DOSE [2 records]

Record 1 - external organization data 2011-04-12

English

Subject field(s)
  • Scientific Measurements and Analyses
  • Radiological Physics (Theory and Application)
  • Radiation Protection
  • Compartment - Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission
DEF

The radiation dose that would result in death.

CONT

It was known ... that the harmful effects of plutonium increased over time, and investigators justified the injection of potentially lethal doses into people by assuming the subject would die quickly from other causes.

OBS

This dose is approximately 5 Sv delivered to the whole body within a short period of time.

Domaine(s)
  • Mesures et analyse (Sciences)
  • Physique radiologique et applications
  • Radioprotection
  • Tiroir - Commission canadienne de sûreté nucléaire
DEF

Dose de rayonnement mortelle.

OBS

English

Subject field(s)
  • Environmental Studies and Analyses
  • Toxicology
  • Posology
DEF

The amount of an agent which will cause death.

CONT

A dose that results in the death of the organism is described as lethal (LD). A dose that results in an adverse toxic health effect other than death is often described as toxic (TD).

OBS

A subscript is often put beside lethal (LD) or toxic (TD) dose levels on dose-response curves, to show what percentage of the organisms experienced a toxic or lethal effect at specific dose levels. For example, a TD20 is a dose level where 20% of the test organisms would have experienced adverse toxic effect(s) and the LD50 is a dose level where 50% of the test organisms would have died (Williams and Burson, et al. 1985).

French

Domaine(s)
  • Études et analyses environnementales
  • Toxicologie
  • Posologie
CONT
