The protease inhibitor leupeptin is known to delay degradation in mammalian muscles; it has been suggested that it may have therapeutic value in dystrophic conditions. (Comparative Biochemistry and Physiology, 1979, vol. 63C, p. 205).

Ces cellules transfectées présentent aussi une modification dans la distribution de LAMP-2 qui se trouve dans des vacuoles périnucléaires gonflées. Des vacuoles similaires sont formées dans les cellules MV1Lu traitées avec un inhibiteur de protéases : la leupeptine. Ce phénomène de gonflement lysosomial est apparemment spécifique aux cellules MV1Lu puisque le traitement avec la leupeptine a peu d'effet sur les cellules HeLa et pas d'effet sur les cellules MDCK. Nous sommes présentement en train de caractériser ces vacuoles par immunofluorescence, microscopie électronique et fractionnement cellulaire.
