Leverrierite was first described by Termier in 1890 from material in black carbonaceous shales near St-Etienne, France.

Il est probable que la leverriérite se forme «in situ» sous faible tranche d'eau en milieu lagunaire. Elle subit un léger transport et se répartit ensuite sans grand déplacement suivant les courants et les fonds. L'origine du matériel est volcanique malgré la rareté de matériaux pyroclassiques qu'elle renferme.
