Un light novel, parfois abrégé ranobe, est un type de roman japonais destiné à un public de jeunes adultes (équivalent lycéens et étudiants). Le terme light novel est un «wasei-eigo», un mot japonais formé à partir de mots de la langue anglaise. Les light novels sont écrits dans une optique de distraction populaire, agrémentés d'illustrations. Le style d'écriture est simple même si les thématiques abordées peuvent être sérieuses, ceci permettant une lecture accessible à une plus grande cible éditoriale.
