English

DEF

A craft of barge type without means of propulsion used for [the] transport of goods to and from ships.

OBS

This term originally applied to dumb barges which were used to "lighten" seagoing ships in harbour areas by means of overside discharge to reduce the draught and so allow them to reach the port or to cross a bar.

OBS

The distinction between a lighter and a barge is more in the manner of use than in form and equipment, the term "barge" being more often used when the load is carried to its destination or over a long distance; while the term "lighter" refers to a short haul, generally in connection with loading or unloading operations of vessels in harbour.

OBS
