La production d'éthanol à partir de matière première lignocellulosique (comme le bois) est un processus se déroulant en deux phases, à savoir : l'hydrolyse enzymatique destinée à libérer le sucre, suivie de la fermentation proprement dite.

OBS

La matière lignocellulosique est composée de cellulose, d'hémicellulose et de lignine. Ces trois polymères distincts sont étroitement associés dans les différentes couches de la paroi des plantes et ils forment une matrice rigide difficile à déstructurer pour libérer la cellulose.
