Il s'agit d'un engin équipé de moteurs de traction seulement et dont le courant électrique est fourni par la locomotive. Accouplé à une locomotive, les 2 forment une «unité» qui possède plus de puissance de traction pour les manœuvres dans les triages. Cet engin ne peut fonctionner seul; il doit absolument être accouplé à une locomotive.
