Le langage normalisé de balisage généralisé fournit la syntaxe cohérente et sans équivoque pour décrire les éléments que l'utilisateur veut identifier dans un document. Ce dernier est une construction logique qui contient un certain nombre d'éléments de document. Par exemple, un livre peut contenir des éléments de « chapitre » qui, pour leur part, contiennent des éléments de « paragraphe » et des éléments d'« images ».
