On ne saurait assez insister sur la nécessité de sondages avec carottage correct pour connaître avec précision: d'une part, l'importance, la nature et les caractéristiques géologiques du gisement (...) d'autre part, la qualité du matériau, et donc sa valeur marchande (...) Dans une exploitation déjà existante, on sait généralement à quoi s'en tenir sur ces points. Encore ne faudrait-il pas s'embarquer dans de grandes dépenses de mécanisation sans s'être assuré de façon certaine de l'étendue et de la durée du gisement exploitable.
