Mahavira-jayanti celebrates the birthday of Lord Mahavira, the 24th Tirthankara. Born with the name Vardhamana in ca. 599 B.C.E., he was later given the titles of honour, Mahavira, which means "Great Hero", and Jina ("Conqueror" or "Victor"), a title applied also to the other Tirthankaras.

Mahâvira (mot à mot «le grand héros»), appelé aussi Vardhamâna («celui qui grandit») [...] a été contemporain du Bouddha (580-460 avant Jésus-Christ). [...] Il connut alors l'illumination qui devait le délivrer, devenant ainsi un conquérant, un vainqueur du karman - c'est-à-dire de la transmigration; «vainqueur» se dit jina en sanscrit, d'où le terme de jaïnisme. Le jina est aussi un Tirthankara, c'est-à-dire un «saint parfait», possédant «34 perfections, l'omniscience, l'impeccabilité, l'éclat du soleil».
