Le solin de base est constitué de carrés de tôle ou de bardeaux posés en même temps que le bardeau du toit. Un carré est posé à chaque rang avec le bord inférieur du carreau un peu au-dessus des fentes du bardeau. Les carreaux couvrent le mur sous la finition ou sur la maçonnerie, et le toit d'au moins 200 mm (8 po), chacun chevauchant le précédent de 75 mm (3 po). Toutes les parties sont collées ensemble avec du ciment d'asphalte.
